The Maiduguri Zonal Command of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Thursday secured the conviction and sentencing of a fraudster, David Osigbe Irumekhai, to one year imprisonment before Justice Aisha Kumaliya of the State High Court, Maiduguri for a N1.4 million fraud.

The convict had obtained the above-mentioned sum from the complainant under the guise of executing a purported supply contract awarded to him by United Nations Humanitarian Commission for Refugees (UNHCR).

The charge read: ‘‘That you David Osigbe Irumekhai sometime in March, 2021 in Maiduguri, Borno State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable \court fraudulently induced Rilwan Olalekan Rabiu by decieiving him to deliver the total sum of One Million Four Hundred Thousand Naira (N1, 400, 000.00) being money allegedly to finance a contract with United Nations Humanitarian Commission for Refugees (UUNHCR) and thereby committed an offence contrary to Section 320 of Penal Code Law Cap 102, Laws of Borno State 1994 and punishable under Section 322 of the same Law.’’

The defendant pleaded ‘guilty’ when the charge was read to him.

Upon his plea, the prosecution counsel, Fatsuma Mohammed, reviewed the facts of the case and prayed the court to convict David as charged.

Justice Kumaliya, after listening to the prayers of both parties, convicted and sentenced David to one year imprisonment.

She, however, gave the convict an option of a N500,000.00 fine.
