No fewer than six people have been confirmed dead after they reportedly consumed contaminated food in Anyoke, Okunchi Ward, Adavi Local Government Area of Kogi State.
New Telegraph gathered that six out of the eight family members who consumed the poisonous cassava flour were diagnosed with multiple organ failure.
The victims who started stooling and vomiting simultaneously shortly after eating the food were rushed to three different hospitals.
However, the two survivors of the poisoning have been discharged from the hospital after receiving treatment.
Reacting to the tragic incident, the state Commissioner for Health, Hon. AbdulAzzez Adams Adeiza said he has visited the survivours and investigation has commenced into the incident.
According to Adeiza, a committee have been constituted, “Specialised team consisting of state and WHO officials, including the Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (DSNO), WHO officers, and local health officials, has been deployed to investigate the outbreak,” the commissioner assures.
He added that samples of the cassava flour have been retrieved for toxicological analysis in collaboration with the Agriculture ministry and the state government has cleared all the victims medical bills.
