The Lagos State Government has issued a warning to organisers of the proposed October 1 protest, advising them not to disrupt economic and social activities in the state.
The government reminded them of a Lagos High Court order restricting protests to designated venues, specifically Freedom and Peace Parks in Ojota and Ketu.
According to the state Attorney-General, Lawal Pedro, SAN, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu supports the right to peaceful protests, but emphasised the importance of adhering to the law.
Pedro noted that the government will not permit street protests that could be hijacked by criminal elements, posing a risk to public safety and order. “The government recognises the fundamental rights to freedom of speech, association, and assembly, but these rights are not absolute,” Pedro explained.
“We must balance these rights with the need to maintain public safety and order, ensuring that other citizens’ rights are not infringed upon.”
Pedro advised protest organisers to utilise the designated venues, where adequate security and press coverage will be provided. He cautioned that ignoring the court order could lead to violence, citing the successful #Endbadgovernance protest held in designated areas.
“The last protest was violencefree and successful because it was held in designated venues,” Pedro said. “We urge organisers to reconsider taking over Lagos streets, which could put other citizens’ properties and businesses at risk.
