The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has attributed the accident that led to the overturning of a gas tanker along the Apapa-Oshodi Expressway on Wednesday to a slippery road occasioned by an early morning rainfall.

The LASTMA Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, disclosed this in a telephone conversation with PUNCH Metro.

PUNCH Online reported on Wednesday that a driver transporting gas in a tanker sustained injuries when his vehicle overturned along the expressway.

The driver’s identity which was not disclosed as of the time of this report, was reported to have been receiving treatment at a medical facility in the state.

Taofiq added that the swift intervention of LASTMA officers, in conjunction with the efforts of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services, averted a potential disaster resulting from the incident.

He stated, “Earlier today, a loaded gas tanker overturned at Anthony Oke, heading towards Gbagada along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway. This incident prompted immediate action from the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority and other emergency responders.

“The tanker driver, who sustained injuries to his hand, was successfully rescued from the scene by LASTMA personnel and is currently receiving medical treatment.

“The Lagos State Fire Service, the LASEMA Response Unit, and other emergency responders were also mobilised to the site, where they diligently implemented safety measures to mitigate potential hazards. Their quick and coordinated response was crucial in containing the situation and preventing further complications.”

Giving a further update on the incident, the spokesperson noted that the slippery nature of the road occasioned by the rain led the vehicle to slip.

He urged drivers in the state to ensure that their vehicles were in good condition before embarking on a journey.

“The driver confirmed that the tyre of the tanker slipped as a result of the rain.

“Our advice is that drivers must ensure they regulate their speed limit and make sure the braking system is regularly checked particularly during this rainy season,” Taofiq said.

PUNCH Metro reported on July 18 that LASTMA in collaboration with other emergency responders, averted a potential disaster following the fall of a truck carrying Premium Motor Spirit in the Ojota area of the state.

The incident was said to have occurred around 2 pm when the truck lost control and fell, spilling its highly flammable content on the road.

Taofiq stated that LASTMA officers promptly arrived at the scene to manage traffic and secure the area which prevented any ignition sources from coming into contact with the spilled fuel, which could have led to a major explosion.
