Police begin manhunt for fleeing tricycle-snatching syndicate

Following the arrest of one Samson Cletus, a suspected tricycle snatcher, the Lagos State Police Command says it has begun a manhunt for other fleeing members of the syndicate.

The police, in a statement by the state’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, and obtained by PUNCH Metro on Monday, disclosed that Cletus was arrested when members of the public alerted the police patrol team to suspicious activities around a tricycle.

Upon sighting the police, members of the syndicate were said to have attempted to flee with the tricycle but Cletus was apprehended by the police while others escaped.

Hundeyin noted that the team however found that the driver of the tricycle was in an unconscious situation.

The PPRO said, “Upon receiving information about suspicious activities around a tricycle, a patrol team from Igando Division raced to the scene on Celestial Road and found the tricycle rider unconscious, while Samson Cletus was arrested trying to make away with the tricycle.”

He added that the rider of the tricycle had been taken to hospital for treatment while disclosing that efforts are ongoing to arrest members of the syndicate.

“The rider is responding to treatment in a hospital. Meanwhile, efforts are on to arrest other syndicate members who fled upon sighting the police,” Hundeyin disclosed.

PUNCH Metro reported on April 9 that the command said no fewer than 303 criminal suspects arrested in multiple raids of dark spots in different parts of Lagos State would face trial.

This was as the command announced it had initiated a clampdown on suspected phone snatchers terrorising some parts of the state.

Hundeyin, in a statement, noted that the suspects were arrested in an operation conducted by the Rapid Response Squad, Divisional Police Officers, and the Area Commanders of the Lagos police.

Hundeyin disclosed that the 303 were selected for trial after careful screening of the arrested suspects.
