Police Nab 195 Suspects, Rescue 19 Abducted Victims In Enugu

No fewer than 195 criminals have been arrested and 19 abducted victims were rescued by the Enugu State Police Command last month.

Correspondingly, the operatives of the Command seized 10 AK-47 rifles, one submachine gun, 37 locally made and other weaponry, and 67 live rounds of various calibres from the suspects.

Saturday Telegraph reports that other goods discovered from the said suspects include 78 live cartridges, 25 automobiles, 15 tricycles, and 25 motorcycles, among others.

CP Kanayo Uzuegbu, the State’s Commissioner of Police, who confirmed the development during a press briefing on Friday said that the procedures were carried out from the beginning of April until May 3.

Uzuegbu claimed that 29 out of the 195 suspects were arrested for kidnapping, 28 for armed robbery, 25 for theft, and seven for murder and culpable homicide.

He said that 20 people were arrested for unlawful possession of firearms, four for rape and defilement, 37 for cultism and related offences, and 45 for vandalism and other offences.

According to him, the majority of the accused have been arraigned and placed in custody, while others are under investigation.

“Interestingly, two male suspects involved in conspiracy and abduction were arraigned, convicted and sentenced to three years imprisonment already,” he added.

The commissioner stated that Enugu State has been reasonably calm, secure, and safe for all law-abiding inhabitants to conduct their legitimate business.

“I, however, urge our citizens, particularly media practitioners and netizens, to always tow the path of discretion, objectivity and accuracy when reporting sensitive security issues.

“This has become necessary to avoid creating an atmosphere of chaos, fear and unnecessary tensions in the minds of unsuspecting citizens.

“Additionally, such acts could also lead to the violation of the law, particularly the Cybercrime Act which attracts legal consequences,” he stated.
