The House of Representatives has asked President Muhammadu Buhari to stop plans by the Nigerian Army to impose Operation Positive Identification in the country.

This follows a motion of urgent public importance by Minority Leader, Ndudi Elumelu.

The lawmaker who raised concerns over the planned nationwide implementation of the programme says it is a recipe to possible militarisation of Nigeria.

Other lawmakers in support of the motion maintained that such plan by the army would lead to the infringement on fundamental rights of Nigerians as enshrined in the 1999 constitution.

The house subsequently mandated its committee on army to work with the Chief of Army Staff on the planned programme, before adjourning for one week.
